Namaste North Yoga opened it’s doors in May of 2012 in downtown Anchorage. The intention to create and hold a space for anyone to practice yoga came from a place of intense desire to guide others to breathe, feel, slowdown, release and be. After surving a near death car accident, Sandy Walters, owner/yoga teacher, was in India in a Meditation practice when it became very clear what she needed to do next. That was how Namaste North Yoga came to be. We do not know what tomorrow really holds for us, what we can do is be in this moment in our relationships to everything around us including that which is eternal.
Our day to day life is complicated and it’s not easy to be in the moment, to observe ourselves and others in compassion. Yoga and Meditation gives us the internal support and tools to be real, feel our own difficulties and obstacles. We may not always be able to resolve everything but it sure does help to acknowledge and breathe into what is tugging at our hearts, restlessness in the mind and body. Yoga helps us to find some ease in the moment which gives us space and awareness to reflect and see the bigger picture.
The name Namaste North came from the idea that here in the North life can seem distant from everything. The extreme seasons of summer and winter has ways of influencing our energies and moods. Yoga helps us to wake up to all that creates waves of chaos or calmness. It’s about being present and being fully alive, witnessing and navigating through it all. Namaste means the light within me honors the light within you. Yoga has it’s way of keeping us close to that light. Therefore, as we practice in the North we are spreading that light.
We went fully virtual during the pandemic. Feel grateful to our community for continuing the practice and still been able to hold on to the space during that time. Now we offer virtual and in-person sessions. We are slowly incorporating in-person sessions as time goes. We are also offer Youtube videos to help you to continue your practice. Yoga is a daily practice and that time you spend whether it is 5 to 60 minutes will give you so much back.
Better yet if you could immerse in Yoga Study to experience it’s rich history, philosophy, mantra, meditation and anatomy through our 200 hour Mandala Yoga Teacher Training. Then we get the opportunity to truly practice yoga and become devoted students. A Student is a guide sharing their practice with family, friends, coworkers, clients and community. This is how Yoga can make a difference in others lives. So hope is that you can take a class and if time is right you can dive deep into the study of yoga (Visit the Teacher Training web page) and see the difference it will make in your life as it has done for many for over thousands of years.
